LIFE COUNSELLING
Life Coaching? Life Mentoring? Psychotherapy?
What Is the Difference? The Million-Dollar Question!
Life coaching is often confused with other related fields, like life mentoring or therapy. Well, I am telling you guys, it is actually quite different.
Therapists are healing and treating—or trying to—while life coaches and mentors are helping you find your inner harmony, potential, and wholeness.
Therapists deal with your past and help release pain, while life coaches and mentors act as partners and companions to help you focus on your present and future.
Please note that a life coach, unlike a mentor, is not allowed to provide advice, give suggestions, customize solutions, or give you a magical cure. A life coach is a companion who helps you find inner peace, think clearly, clarify your objectives, and make the right decisions. Plus, a life coach is not a therapist who offers medication or treatment. A life coach, however, motivates, offers emotional support, and, above all, encourages self-improvement.
A mentor is defined as someone who has walked the path before you. It feels more like a supportive partnership than the top-down approach sometimes associated with a coach or an expert. It signifies that you are offering actionable guidance rather than just entertainment. Mentorship is a two-way street. Action-focused: growing together by mentoring each other. Together, we can simplify and heal. Let’s evolve and untangle life together.
To me, life coaching is a professional relationship. Life mentoring, however, is a professional friendship. Now let me explain this, briefly and simply, with an example. BUT, hey, it is not the Bible; it is just my opinion and my take on that. I am just a normal guy with an opinion—but also experience and responsibility. So, if you disagree with me, then, by all means, try to change my mind. And I might change it with great pleasure if you give me a good reason. After all, life is an amazing school—we are all teachers, and we are all students, and we learn from each other.
Mentor: "Here is what I would do, based on my experience."
Coach: "What do you think you should do?"
Therapist: "First, let's talk about..."
Classic Example:
(Metaphorically Speaking)
Me: How may I help you?
You: Mazin, I am alone in the dark, and I want to go home. Could you please help me!
Me: With pleasure! Here is a flashlight, a map, and a compass. Good luck!
You: Thank you very much!
Me: My pleasure!
That is life coaching.
Or…
Me: How may I help you?
You: Mazin, I am alone in the dark, and I want to go home. Could you please help me!
Me: With pleasure! Here is a flashlight, a map, and a compass. Let us go together and enjoy life.
You: Great! Let us go!
That is life mentoring.
Or…
Me: How may I help you?
You: Mazin, I am alone in the dark, and I want to go home. Could you please help me!
Me: With pleasure! But before giving you a flashlight, a map or a compass, let us talk about “being alone in the dark!”
You: OK! Let us talk!
That is therapy.
